A-Level results have just been released and I want to congratulate our students for their outstanding results in JC H2 Math.
H2 Math is not an easy subject to score and many students often struggle badly.
I want to share 2 success stories of my students to encourage more JC students to do well in this subject.
1. Ivan Wong
Ivan Wong is perhaps one of the earliest students in Intellicat. He joined us in Sec 3 for E Math and A Math tuition. He really struggled badly in Math then and had been failing his tests and exams consistently.
I began coaching him from the basics, and slowly build up his foundations. His mother got really worried when O-level got nearer and she even make him come for extra lessons.
In the end, he managed to Ace both E Math and A Math, and he got into the JC of his choice, Serangoon JC.
During his first year, he struggled quite a bit as the level of difficulty jumped steeply from A Math to H2 Math. He didn’t do well for his first few common tests.
Fortunately, his foundation is pretty strong from his A Math and he managed to catch up with his H2 Math.
However, he had a very hectic CCA schedule which required him to train 3 times a week. Luckily, my tuition centre is close to his JC! He often came to my class, in his sports singlet, right after his training (without showering sometimes).
Despite his busy CCA schedule, Ivan is still very hardworking in his studies. He continued practising his Math tutorials and would Whatsapp me questions in the middle of the night. Fortunately, I don’t sleep early too and I was able to help him most of the time.
The key to his success is his consistency. If he lags behind in a certain topic, I will make sure he master that topic first by explaining to him the concepts and giving him more practice. As a result, he was not lost in school and was able to keep up with his school work.
He scored well for his common tests and prelims, and I know he was prepared to take on A-Levels.
I felt very happy that he scored his well-deserved A for his H2 Math in the end.
2. Regine Ang
Regine Ang joined my centre during Sec 4 for A Math tuition. She is a very bright girl and absorbs things very fast. I only had to show her a few examples and she will manage to understand and apply the same method to solve other questions in a short time.
She managed to Ace her A Math and got into Tampines JC which is near her home.
During her JC 1 days, she did not have much difficulty with H2 Math as her Algebra and Calculus foundations were very strong. As the topics in JC 1 fall under Pure Math which mainly consists of Algebra and Calculus, she managed to cope very well for her H2 Math. She managed to score A for her JC 1 promo exams.
However, when she got to JC 2, she started to struggle.
Many of the topics in JC 2 fall under Statistics and she had difficulty understanding the topics. Her weakest topics are “Permutations and Combinations” and “Probability”, which are the hardest topics (in my opinion) for JC H2 Math.
She tends to give up easily when she sees questions for these topics. But I encouraged her to spend more time to think. I showed her the different ways to solve the questions and list down all the possible cases for each question. Gradually she improved.
However, she was still weak for many topics for JC 2 and didn’t do well for her prelims. She was very demoralised and wanted to give up.
But I continue to encourage her to give it her best shot and this will be the final sprint to her A-level.
As a result, she worked very hard for her H2 Math till her A-levels, and asked me many questions along the way.
When she got her results back, she was so happy when she got A for H2 Math that she messaged me right away.
Regine is now applying for an NUS Economics Course and I wish her all the best in her future studies.
